TRAIECT IV — Vietnam (English version)

New music for traditional Asian instruments and electronics

The fourth edition of the TRAIECT series focuses on Vietnam, with a Đàn Bầu, the Vietnamese monochord, and singing in the Ả Đào tradition. The Đàn Bầu is a very common instrument that is played on a single string with various tone modulations. Singing in the Ả Đào tradition is a complex art form in which sounds are predominantly made with the mouth closed. With over fifty different ethnicities and a multitude of musical traditions, Vietnam has an enormous and diverse cultural wealth. The musicians chosen for this TRAIECT, NGÔ Trà My and Vũ Thị Thùy Linh, represent two of them. Both are famous in Vietnam as unique artists and have represented the country at the 2022 World Expo in Dubai, among others.

In addition to these traditional vietnamese Đàn Bầu instrument and Ả Đào singing, the seven composers from Colombia, England, Italy, Germany, Iran and Vietnam use electronics, which are not understood as an effect, but as an independent partner. It offers additional possibilities of combination or confrontation, of addition or transformation.

The project is taking place in close collaboration with FMSBW, the electronic studio of the Hanover University of Music, Drama and Media, and is made possible by the German Federal Cultural Foundation, the Lower Saxony Foundation and the City of Hanover. Deutschlandfunk will record the concert in Hanover and portray it in its own program on 22.4.2024 at 21.00.
